Marcos Alonso has insisted that he’s very happy to be at Chelsea, while he also added that he needs to add more goals to his game.
The Spaniard, who joined Chelsea from Fiorentina for £23m over the summer, has scored one goal so far for his new club. That strike came in the 5-0 win over Everton.
The 25-year-old had an opportunity to double his tally against Middlesbrough yesterday and, although he connected well with the attempt, he couldn’t steer it beyond Victor Valdes – who is in fine form.
Alonso said, as reported by Goal: “I had a couple of chances to score [against Middlesbrough]. I have to score more goals in the next games. I am getting the chances and, if we keep playing like this, hopefully more goals will come.
“[Getting into a top class team] is something I have been working for, I am very happy to be here, helping the team and now I am just looking forward to next week, another tough game.”
Many eyebrows were raised when Chelsea signed Alonso but the 25-year-old has soon established himself as a significant player in Antonio Conte’s seemingly excellent 3-4-3 system.
Alonso has a tendency to arrive late in key areas, which has caused havoc among opposition defences as he has been that extra man who unexpectedly arrives with space to cross the ball in.
Chelsea welcome Spurs on Saturday in what will be the first meeting between the teams since their fiery contest towards the end of last campaign. Tottenham took a 2-0 lead but the Blues rallied in the second half, bringing the game level which resulted in Spurs losing the Premier League title to Leicester City.
