Maresca Blames Pochettino Over Habit He Wants To End At Chelsea

Maresca Blames Pochettino Over Habit He Wants To End At Chelsea

Chelsea Manager, Enzo Maresca reportedly pointed a finger at Mauricio Pochettino over the defensive issues the team is facing.

In his first preseason, new manager Maresca is learning that his Blues’ defense is far from solid. The team conceded more than 60 goals in the Premier League the previous season.

During the Blues US tour, Real Madrid were the latest team to easily defeat them. While Scottish champions Celtic scored four goals against them. They have been a regular source of goals conceded.

According to The Mirror, Maresca lamented a few of the problems, most notably the high defensive line, which he attributes to the former manager. After seeing Los Blancos win 2-1 in Carolina thanks to goals from Lucas Vazquez and Brahim Diaz in the first half, he dutifully took a subtle jab at Pochettino.

He said: “One of my first meetings with the squad was about the amount of goals we conceded last year with the defensive line very high. We are not working on defensive lines so high. It’s a habit from last year, or years ago, I don’t know.

“We are trying to drop the defensive line a little bit, usually about four or five metres, just to have some advantage. Last year, we already conceded many goals with this problem. Hopefully we can solve it very soon.”

Prior to his exit, Pochettino did manage to motivate his Chelsea team to play better. But last season, they conceded four goals or more to Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Arsenal.
