Mason Greenwood’s imminent transfer from Manchester United to Marseille has been greeted with criticisms as the Mayor of the City becomes the latest individual to denounce the move.
The forward’s contract at Old Trafford is about to expire, and the Ligue 1 outfit have been linked to the player along with other teams like Lazio. After spending the previous season on loan at Getafe, Greenwood hasn’t appeared on the pitch for United since January 2022.
After his arrest for attempted rape, using coercive and controlling behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm, he was placed on suspension.
Following the key witnesses’ withdrawal of cooperation, the Crown Prosecution Service dismissed all charges, thereby ending the case.
According to Liverpool News, Marseille’s mayor Benoit Payan told RMC, “I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable.”
Payan’s comments against the 22-year-old emerged following a response from certain Marseille supporters who expressed their disdain of the club’s interest in Greenwood via social media and the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

The one-capped England international, who scored ten goals for Getafe in all competitions last season, is estimated to be worth $35 million (£27 million/€32 million).
“At a time when negotiations for the arrival of Mason Greenwood are announced as becoming increasingly advanced, it seems necessary to explain, once again and before the damage becomes irreversible, why this transfer seems inconceivable in view of the values displayed by the club and why it would mean for many of us a red line that would irreparably damage the passion that we have for this club,” a statement on OM Forum reads.
