Martial’s next goal will cost Manchester United €10m

He has consistently been linked with a move away, has appeared to fall out with manager Jose Mourinho several times and has failed to set the Premier League alight since joining Manchester United in 2015.

But there’s one club who will desperately be hoping Anthony Martial stays at Old Trafford for just a little bit longer: AS Monaco.

Martial scored against Watford on Saturday in his first Premier League start since January 15. The goal was also his 24th for the club.

Not only did that goal help Manchester United become the first team to accumulate 2000 points in the Premier League since its inception in 1992, but it moved the player one goal closer to a personal landmark.

Martial’s next senior goal for the United first-team – his 25th – will reportedly see Monaco receive €10m (£8.5m) as it will trigger a clause in the deal signed between his current and former clubs.

As well as 25 senior goals, United will have to pay a €10m fee when Martial wins his 25th cap for France while still at the club (he’s currently on 15) and another €10m if he is nominated for the FIFA Ballon d’Or – although that may be up for debate now the award has been divided and renamed.

These stipulations were revealed by leaked contract documents shortly after the player signed for United, then managed by Louis van Gaal.

Martial initially signed for a fee of €50m, although that could rise to €80m (£68m) if all the clauses are met.

Monaco are also said to be due a 50 per cent sell-on fee if United receive between €60m and €100m for the forward.

And in bad news for United shareholders, it looks like Martial wants to stay and make sure all those clauses are met.

He tweeted last week: ‘Don’t listen to the papers, it’s wrong. Thanks. Come on United’
