Manchester United have the ability to boost their sell-on percentage in Mason Greenwood’s contract, with sources detailing why a sale this summer may not be the most beneficial for the Red Devils.
The 23-year-old left Old Trafford permanently last summer after a successful season-long loan with Getafe, which ended when serious allegations against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. An internal inquiry by Manchester United ruled that Greenwood would never play for the club again.
Marseille purchased Greenwood for up to £26.6 million, including a 50% sell-on clause for Manchester United, which means they will reclaim half of the profit the French club makes from any transfer, as things stand.
However, TEAMtalk understands that the sell-on clause is actually adjustable, allowing Man Utd to buy additional sell-on percentages based on both performance-related criteria and time.

As Greenwood’s contract progresses, Manchester United will have options to buy a larger sell-on percentage interest, effectively refunding Marseille a portion of the purchase price in order to increase the sell-on percentage to more than 50%.
Greenwood has 15 goals in 22 games for Marseille, attracting the attention of some top European clubs. The longer Greenwood stays and performs well, the more sure the Red Devils will be that his worth will climb, and they may decide to raise their sell-on percentage.
According to sources, Greenwood’s sell-on clause could climb to more than 60%, albeit it is currently just 50%, and if that changes before the summer remains to be seen.
Barcelona remains interested in Mason Greenwood.
Some reports say that Marseille values Greenwood at €70 million (£58.1 million, $73.2 million).
As previously stated, Manchester United will only receive 50% of the profits from any Greenwood sales. Marseille would profit by £35.5 million on £58.1 million, therefore Manchester United would receive £17.75 million in that scenario.
TEAMtalk knows there is interest in Greenwood, but insiders have downplayed the possibility of a move to Paris Saint-Germain, despite links. If Greenwood is sold, Marseille will most likely want to do business with a foreign contender.
