In spite of Jude Bellingham’s reported ‘rapist’ comments made during a match, Mason Greenwood does not want to see him punished.
Bellingham, 20, is charged with directing the insult at Greenwood, a Manchester United loanee, during Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Getafe earlier this month. The Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm against Greenwood in February 2023. Greenwood is now spending the current season on loan with Getafe, headquartered in Madrid.

During Real Madrid’s 2-0 win, Bellingham tackled the United academy product and an expert lip reader believes footage of an on-field altercation shows that the England international called Greenwood a ‘rapist’. Following Bellingham’s alleged slur, Getafe asked referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea to note the allegation in his match report.
Spanish football chiefs promptly launched an investigation, but it’s now claimed that Greenwood wants the probe dropped. The 22-year-old is keen to keep the attention on his football, despite being ‘very upset’ at the time and surprised that it came from Bellingham.
Mason has told them he doesn’t want Jude to be punished and has urged them to drop it, an insider informed The Sun. He wants to continue playing football and doesn’t want any negative publicity. He wasn’t expecting that from someone like Jude, therefore he was furious at the time.
“But he knows he’s always likely to be a target for that kind of stuff so he’s accepted he’ll need a thick skin.”
Greenwood is still bound to United through the end of the following campaign. According to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s new co-owner, a decision regarding his future will be made this summer.
