Martin Keown believes Aston Villa put up their “best performance in years” in their 1-0 win over Manchester City on Wednesday.
Leon Bailey’s second-half goal was enough to secure the club’s 14th successive home league victory. Villa are now one point ahead of City in the rankings and four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who they face next.
And former Gunners and Villa defender Keown was full of praise for the boys in Claret and Blue. He also believes their victory over Pep Guardiola’s team has taken them to “another level” as they chase a top four finish and a potential title race.

“Everything that they’ve done tonight you’ve said this about City so many times in the past about how well they press, how comfortable they are building out from the back and it was all Aston Villa,” he told BBC News
“It’s probably their best performance in years and it really has catapulted them now, to another level. I mean, the front two, the work rate they get through. They won the ball back 13 times in the final third, that’s more than any other team has done so far this season.
“It works really well when they press, but this fella, McGinn, he’s going from strength to strength. It was just wave after wave after wave, 22 shots they had today seven on target.
“Bailey, I feel this guy who’s really going from strength to strength deserves a little bit of good fortune. He’s been a bit unlucky at times, getting injuries and look, gets that ricochet, but it’s what their play deserved tonight. Absolutely outstanding in every department from the goalkeeper right the way through to the centre forward.”
