Former Italy defender Marco Materazzi believes that Jose Mourinho will become the next manager of Manchester United, according to Tutto Mercato.
Materazzi played under the Portuguese manager for two years when Mourinho took over at Inter Milan.
The Inter hero was used as a late substitute during the Serie A club’s 2-0 win over Bayern Munich to win the Champions League in 2009/10.
The 52-year-old was sacked from his role at Chelsea on Thursday after just four league wins with the club in 2015/16, and has since been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal’s future has come under intense scrutiny following a run of six games without a win across all competitions, including elimination from the Champions League and a 2-1 loss to Norwich on Saturday.
Materazzi thinks that his old manager is likely to take over from the Dutchman, saying: “I think so.”
The former centre-back also had his say on the Blues’ decision to move on from Mourinho: “Unfortunately there is no gratitude left in football, so I was not surprised by his sacking.”
Mourinho guided Chelsea to the Premier League title last season but nine defeats in 16 matches, the same amount as in the last two seasons, saw the side sit just one point off of the relegation zone prior to his dismissal.
This weekend, Chelsea instantly responded by beating Sunderland 3-1. The Blues had 17 efforts on goal, whilst also dominating possession (60%).
