Joel Matip has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool, staying at Anfield until the summer of 2024. The Cameroon international has been one of Liverpool’s outstanding performers since the turn of the year.
He had been a player consigned to the bench owing to the form of youngster Joe Gomez, alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Central defender Matip joined from Schalke in the summer of 2016 on a free transfer and has gone on to make 107 appearances in all competitions.
Nine of them have come this season and has scored two goals, and he continues to keep Gomez out of the side on a regular basis.
The 28-year-old had missed Liverpool’s two previous games before the international break against Red Bull Salzburg and Leicester City but he is expected to return to fitness as they take on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s beleaguered Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
And, the news will delight many Liverpool fans, with the club riding on the crest of a wave after their 100% start to the new Premier League season.
Matip echoed those sentiments and says he is thrilled to be extending his stay at Anfield. “It’s a great feeling to be a longer part of the club. It’s really just a great feeling,” he said. “From the outside, you know Liverpool is such a big club – but when you are inside, then you really get a feeling for how big the club is in all the countries – the supporters are everywhere. It’s a massive and big club that I think every player would want to play for.”
Since joining Liverpool, Matip has helped the Reds win two trophies, the most notable being the Champions League title against Tottenham in May as they won 2-0 to lift their sixth European crown.
He was also part of the team which defeated Chelsea in the Super Cup in August on penalties.
