Mauricio Pochettino Interested In England Job But Jurgen Klopp And Pep Guardiola Appointments Unlikely

Mauricio Pochettino wants to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager if the Football Association decides to hire a foreign coach, but the prospects of Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp getting the post appear slim.

Pochettino is out of job after leaving Chelsea on mutual consent at the end of last season, and he would welcome a contact from the FA.

The Argentine is well-known to the FA’s technical director, John McDermott, who was Tottenham’s academy director while Pochettino was in charge in north London, and understands the English national team culture, having produced a number of players for Southgate from his Spurs and Chelsea teams, most recently Cole Palmer.Reported By Standard News.

McDermott and the FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, will oversee the process of appointing a replacement to Southgate, who stood down following a second successive European Championship Final defeat.

Klopp has been suggested as a potential high-profile candidate, but the German is understood to seek a break from the game after resigning as Liverpool’s head coach at the conclusion of the season, and he quickly turned down an approach from the United States last week.

Klopp was paid an estimated £15 million each year at Anfield, three times Southgate’s stated salary, which would likely be another major stumbling point for the FA.

The primary contenders for the position are Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter, and England Under-21 coach Lee Carlsey, with Carsley expected to be interviewed and given the position on an interim basis if England requires a caretaker for the Nations League matches in September.
