Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has claimed that Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe is better than Thierry Henry was at his age.
Mbappe has enjoyed a tremendous breakthrough season, with the 18-year-old’s ascent continuing tonight as he hit a brace in Monaco’s Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Henry also commenced his career at Monaco, but Keown feels that Mbappe is already performing at a higher level than his compatriot was at that stage.
Speaking pre-game on BT Sport, Keown said: “Henry wasn’t doing this at this age, Henry played in the wide position for Monaco and then moved central for Arsenal. This guy has more freedom, has movement off the ball.
“He’s a tricker, his movement is quicker than anybody else. He’s got that responsibility about him, he says to other plays ‘come on, let’s do it’. They’ll be trying to hold onto him, he’s getting what he needs right now.”
Mbappe has been excellent this campaign, with the starlet having scored twelve goals in Ligue 1, while he has also caught the eye with his link-up play, creating twelve chances.
Now a senior France international, Mbappe seems set for an incredibly bright future, with his pace and skill meaning he can torment opposing defenders.
Monaco have a very talented young squad, with Mbappe certainly the jewel in their crown, and the Ligue 1 leaders will be determined to keep their team together this summer.
