Since Manchester City won the UEFA Champions League for the first time this year, PSG may be the last club to be regarded as underachieving on the continental level.
This is because despite all of their investments and the talent on their roster, they have not been successful on the biggest stage of European club football.
They fell to Bayern Munich in the round of 16 this season, marking the fifth time in the last seven years that they haven’t advanced past the first knockout round of the competition.
In the Covid-shortened 2019–20 season, they did make it to the final, but Bayern Munich ultimately prevailed.
The superstars on PSG’s roster are also starting to dwindle; among those leaving the club this year are Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos. While younger, high-potential players will replace its aging icons, it is still a gamble for a team that has undoubtedly struggled since their purchase by Qatar.
In addition, they run the risk of losing Kylian Mbappe as the 24-year-old becomes more and more resentful of how the team is being governed.
🚨 Kylian Mbappé has informed PSG of his decision: he’ll NOT trigger the option to extend current contract until 2025, it means that deal would expire next June 2024 — as L’Équipé called.

He has been toying with the idea of moving to Real Madrid for a number of years, and has decided against exercising his option to extend his contract when it expires next year.
In an interview, Mbappe gave his opinion on the struggles at PSG in recent years. “At the top level, for a competitor like me, the goal is to win all the titles,” said Mbappe.
“We knew there were shortcomings that sooner or later we end up paying for.
“We have to learn from the mistakes of each season, not to repeat them every time. These are not empty words.”
