McGinn in awe of ‘draining’ Reds

Aston Villa’s John McGinn admits Liverpool were able to rise above their in-fighting to eventually wear down his side on Saturday and take all three points. It seemed Trezeguet’s 21st-minute goal would be enough for the hosts to take all three points at Villa Park but, yet again, the Reds found a way to turn things around and stay six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Scotland international Andy Robertson levelled affairs with three minutes left on the clock before Sadio Mane ensured the points went back to Anfield four minutes into stoppage time.
It was cruel on the Villans who battled well throughout the match against the European champions and looked good value for at least a point.
It was not a vintage Liverpool performance and the opposition players seemed to be niggling each other, but McGinn was still impressed by the way they were able to put it to one side and fight back at the death. “A lot of their players were arguing and you could tell they were uncomfortable in the first half,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “When teams start arguing with each other, you normally know you’ve got them, but at the same time you have to respect they are such a good team, they just regroup, get together and go again.”
The result leaves the West Midlanders down in 16th spot in the top-flight standings, with 11 points from as many games played, and next Sunday sees them make the short trip to Molineux to face Wolves.
It will be another tough test for Dean Smith’s men but at least Villa will not be up against either of the top two who, according to McGinn, “just drain you mentally” throughout the 90 minutes with their relentless pressing.
