Steven Gerrard made a huge statement that Lionel Messi is not only the best player in the world, but that he is also the best there will ever be.
The Liverpool legend, who recently left his MLS side LA Galaxy, was admiring the Barcelona star following their win over Celtic.
The Catalan giants beat the Glasgow-based outfit 2-0 at Parkhead, with the Argentine maestro getting himself on the score sheet twice.
Messi broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, latching onto a beautifully timed Neymar pass to smash the ball past Craig Gordon.
Ten minutes into the second half and Barcelona struck again after Emilio Izaguirre was adjudged to have pulled down Luis Suarez in the box.
Messi stepped up to take the spot kick and put his side two ahead, ensuring they finish Group C as winners, and condemning Celtic to elmination.
Speaking after the game, Gerrard reflected on the Argentine’s performance and was happy to heap praise on just how good he is.
The 36-year-old says: “He’s an incredible footballer. I think the best ever, the best there will ever be. He’s just an absolute pleasure to watch.”
