Barcelona confirm Messi has undergone kidney tests

Lionel Messi was forced to miss Barcelona training on Monday after undergoing tests following a problem with kidney stones in December.

Messi was a doubt for the final of the Club World Cup in December after suffering from renal colic, an abdominal pain commonly attributed to kidney stones, but he recovered in time to play and help the Catalans win their fifth trophy of 2015.

However, yesterday the Argentina international was forced to miss Barcelona training in order to undergo scans on his kidneys following the diagnosis in December.

Barcelona released a club statement on their official website, reading: “Barcelona striker Lionel Messi will undergo several tests on Monday and Tuesday to assess the evolution of the kidney problems he suffered last December.”

Messi has been mesmerising in recent weeks as he and Luis Suarez have carried on scoring for fun. The 28-year-old has not scored an incredible number of goals this season as he has done in previous years, but he has hit 12 in 17
games in La Liga so far.

He has also assisted five goals but Messi is on target to lift another Liga title this year as his relationship with Suarez and Neymar is still flourishing on the field, giving the Catalans a three-point advantage at the top of the table.

Messi will be back in training in time to face Valencia in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday night following his scans, but it is not yet known whether the club’s No.10 will play considering Luis Enrique’s side won the first leg 7-0.

The Argentina international missed part of the Club World Cup in Japan as a result of renal colic, an abdominal discomfort commonly caused by kidney stones.
