Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has accepted responsibility for his team’s end-of-season collapse in the Premier League title race.
Before going into a slump that has seen them win only two of their past seven games, the north London team led the league for the majority of the season, ahead of Manchester City by as much as eight points.
However, in addition to having a game in hand on their title rivals, City now sits four points clear at the top of the league.
If they defeat Chelsea next weekend, they would win the title for the sixth time in six years.
Arteta made no secret of his disappointment following Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Brighton before adamantly expressing that he felt accountable for letting the fans down.
The Spaniard stated in a statement to Sky Sports: “I hate the feeling of letting people down when they’re really expecting something.
“That’s the biggest regret I have today.”

He added: “A week ago, I was standing here feeling proud and today we have to apologise for the performance in the second half. It was not acceptable.
“Mathematically, it’s still possible, but today it’s impossible to think about it.
“We need to digest the result and the performance in the second half, understand why and have a different reaction.”
