Mikel Arteta Fails To Fix Arsenal’s Referee Problem, As Sanctions Continue To Flow

Mikel Arteta may have done wonders for Arsenal, but he is struggling to handle the club’s disciplinary difficulties.

On Saturday, William Saliba became the third Arsenal player to be sent off this season, with the French defender receiving a straight red card after dragging Bournemouth’s Evanlison down as the final man. With a one-man disadvantage, Arteta’s squad finally lost control of the contest, allowing the Cherries to win 2-0. Reported By Mirror.

Arsenal suffered their first Premier League defeat of the 2024/25 season, which has been tarnished by expensive dismissals. Declan Rice was sent off against Brighton in August, while Leandro Trossard was sent off against Manchester City last month, both of which cost Arsenal points.

It illustrates Arsenal’s chronic lack of discipline, a trend that has persisted during Arteta’s tenure. Since the Spaniard took over on Boxing Day 2019, Arsenal have got 18 red cards in the Premier League, five more than any other team.

Arteta admitted that they have A problem?

Following Saturday’s loss at the Vitality Stadium, Arteta admitted that the problem has been “discussed” internally, albeit not for the first time. In January 2022, after his team received three red cards in four games, the former midfielder remarked that something had to “change” since “it’s difficult to win matches [with 10 men].”

Arsenal must address their discipline concerns if they are to end a two-decade Premier League title drought. Leicester City is the only title-winning side in the last decade to have received more than two red cards in a season, with three in 2015/16.

Furthermore, Pep Guardiola’s City have got more than two red cards in a season only twice during his eight-year reign, and on both occasions, they failed to win the league. On Match of the Day, Alan Shearer pulled no punches when reflecting on Arsenal’s tendency towards on-pitch indiscipline. “Quite clearly, they’re not going to get enough points if nothing changes,” he said. “It can’t continue”.
