Mikel Arteta Issues Blunt Five-Word Verdict On Newcastle United After Arsenal Carabao Cup Exit

Mikel Arteta reserved his appreciation for Newcastle United after Arsenal’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final defeat at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon scored in either half to secure Newcastle’s return to the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies won the semi-final tie 4-0 on aggregate, after defeating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium last month. According To Sky Sport.

Newcastle defeated Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League back in November. The Gunners have lost five matches in all competitions this season, with Eddie Howe’s side inflicting three defeats without allowing a goal.

The match was Arsenal’s 11th match of 2025 so far just over a month into the new year.

“Physically, we were tired,” Arteta said. “We have played numerous games. Emotionally, it was a completely different game to believe right there in the finish that we could accomplish it.”

“We had so many aspirations that we believed we could turn things around. The game began with the opening action, a goal that was rejected. We had two opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize, and the game switched.

“It’s a tricky one. We recognized how daunting the assignment was based on the result in London. Now we must look forward; first and foremost, it will be terrible. When we are in Dubai, we refuel.”

Spurs take a 1-0 lead into the second leg away to Premier League leaders and Carabao Cup winners Liverpool. Newcastle last reached the Carabao Cup final in 2023, where they were defeated 2-0 by Manchester United.
