Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, according to Mohamed Salah, has left him “totally devastated” and the club has “no excuse” for not finishing in the top four.
After defeating Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday night, Manchester United clinched the last Champions League berth, ending Liverpool’s ambitions of competing in Europe’s elite club competition.
Meanwhile, after a 0-0 draw with Leicester on Monday, Newcastle also earned a spot in the Champions League.
It is the first time since the 2015–16 season that Liverpool have missed out on the Champions League. With the Merseyside team expected to end the 2022–23 campaign in fifth position, Salah believes the six-time European winners have let themselves down.
I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic… pic.twitter.com/qZmA9WsueM
