Moises Caicedo Opens Up On Turning Down Liverpool For Chelsea: “It Was So Difficult”

Moises Caicedo has admitted that Chelsea’s patience helped them outbid Liverpool for the Ecuador international last summer.

Caicedo, 22, was in high demand after a good period at Brighton, and he had been connected with both the Blues and Liverpool for months before his £115 million move to Chelsea.

That sum was, and still is, a British transfer record. And, while Caicedo was free to choose between the Premier League’s top clubs, the midfielder has spoken out about why he chose to be a blue rather than red.

In an interview with The Athletic, Caicedo confesses that it was difficult. So difficult. As you are aware, Liverpool is a large club. Chelsea, too. But Chelsea stayed with me for a few months. I couldn’t miss out on them. Because they supported me throughout difficult times when Brighton refused to let me leave. It was a difficult decision, but I was certain I wanted to go to Chelsea.

Following the completion of Caicedo’s transfer story, he had a rough first season with Chelsea, struggling to establish his footing. The Londoners had a rough season, but recovered form late on to finish sixth.

Caicedo believes that the pressure of being the most expensive player in British football, as well as the demands of playing for a club of Chelsea’s renown, contributed significantly to his loss of confidence at the time.

He went on to say, “The beginning was difficult for me because you are at a large club, the fee is high, and you must win every game. It was harder for me because the pressure was lower in Brighton. At Chelsea, things are different.
