Alvaro Morata says the winner against Manchester United was his most important goal in a Chelsea shirt.
The Spain international, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer despite strong interest from United, had not scored in six games going into Sunday’s meeting with Jose Mourinho’s side at Stamford Bridge.
But Morata ended his drought with a fine headed effort, rising high before diverting Cesar Azpilicueta’s delivery back across goal and past a rooted David De Gea.
It was the 25-year-old’s eighth goal for the Blues since joining from Real Madrid in July and one he had plotted with team-mate Azpilicueta before kick-off.
Goals against Atletico Madrid and Stoke will no doubt rank highly in the Spaniard’s mind, but asked whether Sunday’s was his most important goal for Chelsea to date, Morata told Sky Sports: “For sure.
“I told [Azpilicueta] before the game, I need one today like this. He made [the cross] and I’m very, very happy.
Manager Antonio Conte was delighted with the victory and was especially encouraged by the desire his side displayed.
“I was very happy because we beat United,” Conte said.
Don’t forget they are one of the best candidates to win the title with Man City. To have this type of performance, and to see this spirit, I’m pleased. It’s great for me, the players, the club and our fans, to breathe this energy, enthusiasm and passion.”
