Motta set to replaced axed Andreazzoli at Genoa

Thiago Motta is set to be installed as Genoa’s new coach following the sacking of Aurelio Andreazzoli on Tuesday. Genoa only moved to appoint the 65-year-old in the summer after he just failed in his quest to keep Empoli in Serie A.
Ironically it was Genoa who avoided relegation at the expense of Andreazzoli’s side on the final day of the season, but Cesare Prandelli departed the role afterwards.
The Rossoblu decided to entice Andreazzoli to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to replace Prandelli and he had a positive impact in the opening games as he won two and drew one of his first three competitive games at the helm.
But five defeats in the next six, including Sunday’s disastrous 5-1 mauling at Parma proved to be the final straw for the club’s hierarchy who dispensed of his services on Tuesday.
Reports claim Motta has already accepted the Grifone’s offer to replace Andreazzoli and is set to be confirmed in the near future.
It will be the first big managerial position for the Brazilian-born former Italy international midfielder, Motta, who spent one season with Genoa in 2008-09.
The 37-year-old finished his career with a six-year spell at French giants Paris Saint-Germain and went into coaching with the team’s Under-19s.
Motta has also enjoyed splaying spells at Barcelona and Inter Milan, winning two Champions League titles, two Spanish titles, a Serie A winner’s medal and five Ligue 1 crowns with PSG.
