Mourinho blames Chelsea players for Champions League failure

Jose Mourinho has hit back at the Chelsea fans who hurled abuse at him during his Manchester United side’s loss at Stamford Bridge, describing himself as the Blues best ever manager.

Mourinho was sacked from Chelsea in December 2015, just months after winning the Premier League title, following an abysmal start to the season. He took the United job in the summer.

The Portuguese boss was met with chants of “Judas” and “F*** off Mourinho” from a section of Blues fans during his second return to Chelsea since becoming United boss.

Mourinho was seen to physically react to those fans during the match by holding up three fingers, presumably in reference to the three Premier League titles he won with Chelsea in 2005, 2006 and 2015.

And the 54-year-old has now responded to the chants by calling himself the club’s “No.1” manager.

Mourinho has also blamed the Chelsea players for their failure to achieve Champions League qualification last season, saying the fault was not down to him as they had the rest of the season to correct their initial form.

Mourinho said in his post-match press conference: “Until the moment they have a manager that wins four Premier Leagues, for them I am the number one. Judas is No.1.

“If Chelsea won the Champions League last season they’d be in it this season. It’s not my fault, it’s the fault of those who stayed here and didn’t win the Champions League.

“I left the club last season in the Champions League, winning the Champions League group, in the knockout phase playing the second leg at home.

“What I share with them is that we didn’t have a good Premier League, and I share responsibility with that.”

N’Golo Kante’s goal was enough to eliminate the Red Devils and put Chelsea into the semi-finals of the FA Cup in Monday’s match, with United having already won the EFL Cup this season.
