Mourinho: I would compare managing Man Utd to Real Madrid, not Chelsea

Jose Mourinho insists managing Manchester United is on par with his time at Real Madrid and not Chelsea.

The ‘special one’ is closing in on his first full season Red Devils boss following his appointment as Louis van Gaal’s
replacement last summer and has so far led the club to success in the EFL Cup as well as the semi-finals of the Europa League.

With United failing to mount a Premier League title challenge this campaign, the Portuguese tactician admits the challenge he faces at Old Trafford is the one of most difficulty of all his managerial jobs – going as far to compare it to his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I would say it’s similar to the Real Madrid one because they were two giants in two difficult periods,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“You go to the giant club, you feel the dimension, you feel the pressure and you feel the expectation.

“But you also feel the club is not ready, not ready for this kind of expectation and you have to work more.

“And then you have to fight more. So I would compare my arrival here to my arrival at Real Madrid. Chelsea was a different profile, Inter Milan a different profile. Porto a different profile as well.”

Mourinho is the most successful manager in the west London outfit’s history after guiding them to three league titles across two separate spells but his relationship with the club’s supporters appears to have soured since his departure in December 2015.

He held up three fingers – referencing the number of titles won – in the FA Cup meeting between the two sides at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season in response to a number of supporters seemingly expressing their anger at his decision to manage United.
