Mourinho dedicates Community Shield victory to Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho dedicated the club’s Community Shield victory to former manager Louis van Gaal.

He also said the 2-1 win over Premier League champions Leicester City was for the seven players left out of the match day squad.

“I dedicate this victory to seven not selected and Louis van Gaal,” said Mourinho.

Van Gaal led the team to FA Cup victory in May days before he was sacked from his role. The victory meant they faced the Foxes for the upcoming season’s curtain raiser at Wembley.

Although he will not be fondly remembered at Old Trafford, van Gaal did win United’s first FA Cup at the new Wembley, something Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes couldn’t achieve.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored an 82nd minute winner to secure the first piece of silverware in the Mourinho-era at United.

A spectacular goal from Jesse Lingaard was cancelled out by Jamie Vardy as the match looked to be going to penalties. However, the Swede met Antonio Valencia’s cross for the second match in a row to secure the win for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese was characteristically dramatic during the match, taking off Juan Mata in the last minutes despite putting the Spaniard on as a 63rd minute sub.

News that Paul Pogba has been given permission to undergo a medical with United surfaced just before today’s match, with the Frenchman’s long-awaited transfer nearing completion.
