Ricardo Carvalho has backed Jose Mourinho to bring the Premier League title back to Manchester United in his second season in charge at the club and believes the Portuguese boss can fill the void left by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Carvalho worked with Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid, winning four league titles under the guidance of the 53-year-old coach. Mourinho’s newest role in football was confirmed last week when United announced him as the replacement for Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils haven’t lifted the league title since the iconic Scotsman, Sir Alex, departed the club in 2013 and indeed the side have failed to finish any higher than fourth since his departure.
But Carvalho believes Mourinho is the right man to make the Old Trafford outfit great again and feels his old boss has the presence needed to replace Sir Alex at the helm of United.
Mourinho has won the league title in his second season at every club he’s been at, something Carvalho expects the coach to once again achieve at United.
The 38-year-old Portugal defender told the Sun on Sunday: “I know that Jose will be a success at Manchester United. I have no doubt that he can bring trophies back to United again and that he will make them champions.
“I don’t know if it will be in the first year, the second year or the third, but he will win the title again. My prediction is that it will be in the second year.
“United have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but Jose can be the one to replace him. He will not worry what went before. He will want to make his own success.
“Jose deserves to be at the biggest clubs because he is one of the top coaches. He has the quality to make Manchester United win again.”
Mourinho was fired from his job at Chelsea after an abysmal start to the season, and will be looking to rebuild his stellar reputation with the Red Devils.
