Manchester United are reportedly preparing a shock move for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, as he continues his contract stand-off with the Gunners.
In news that’s likely to send shockwaves through the red and white half of north London, it would appear that Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho, is preparing to bid for Ozil, a player who was under his command at Real Madrid.
It would be one of the biggest moves in the Premier League and could happen if the German doesn’t renew his contract with the Gunners.
The 28-year-old is regarded as possibly the finest creative midfielder in the Premier League and his form last season prompted Arsenal to open up contract talks with him over the summer.
However, fast-forward three months into this campaign and the Germany international is yet to extend his stay at the Emirates.
Ozil, who will see his contract expire in 2018 with Arsenal, is already the club’s highest-paid player but is after a wage increase in his new deal.
However, The Sun reports that Manchester United have been alerted by the continuous back and forth by Ozil and his employers, prompting them to eye up a potential shock move.
Jose Mourinho’s side are prepared to offer Ozil a £250,000-a-week deal – more than the £200,000 Arsenal are prepared to cough up – although the club understand there is no chance of signing Ozil in the winter.
They are, however, prepared to wait until next summer if Ozil has not signed a new deal with Arsenal by then, with Mourinho keen on a reunion with the player he snapped up at Real Madrid.
Whilst the rumour seems far-fetched, Arsenal fans will still be slightly tentative after a similar thing happened between Robin van Persie a few years ago when he ended up joining Man Utd.
