Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes that Jose Mourinho has “run out of excuses” already at Manchester United, as their poor start to the season continues.
United had won just two of their previous seven Premier League fixtures prior to Sunday’s meeting with West Ham United at Old Trafford, subsequently losing touch with the teams around them as a result. Despite thumping Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday, that didn’t change their domestic fortunes.
Mourinho’s men went behind after two minutes thanks to Diafra Sakho, but pulled themselves back into it 20 minutes later through Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as they looked to make their dominance count. However West Ham defended brilliantly, frustrating the hosts to earn an important point in their season.
For Mourinho though, he was once again sent to the stands after Paul Pogba was booked for diving in the first half, just weeks on from being dismissed from the touchline in United’s goalless draw with Burnley. Redknapp was far from impressed with his actions, claiming the Portuguese is already out of excuses at Old Trafford.
“Everyone will be talking about Jose Mourinho kicking a bottle but it must not mask Manchester United’s poor start to the season,” the pundit wrote in his Daily Mail column. “We normally see this kind of behaviour from Mourinho after three years at a club — not six months. It is clearly having a negative effect.
“This is United’s worst start to a campaign since 1990-1991 and they have not won at home in the league since September despite splashing out £160 million on players. Mourinho has run out of excuses and his antics reflect badly on the club. When you are the manager of Manchester United you have to hold yourself better than this.”
United have scored 18 goals and conceded 15 in their opening 13 Premier League fixtures this season, with a shot accuracy of 47%, as they sit sixth on 20 points, eight adrift of the top four.
Next up for them is another home clash with West Ham in the EFL Cup quarter- finals on Wednesday, before taking on Everton at Goodison Park.
