Mourinho tells Manchester United to sell Mata and Fellaini

Midfield duo Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini could be on the way out of Manchester United should Jose Mourinho be appointed as manager, with the Portuguese reportedly telling Ed Woodward that the pair are surplus to requirements.

The former Chelsea boss looks set to replace under-fire manager Louis Van Gaal at the helm of the Red Devils, with the Portuguese tactician having already agreed in a three-year deal with the club, worth £15 million-per-season, according to the Daily Mirror.

As a result, the Daily Mail suggests that 53-year-old wants an overhaul of the current Manchester United roster, with Mourinho prepared to allow Mata and Fellaini to leave the club.

The report claims that Mourinho has already met with executive vice-chairman Woodward to speak about the squad proposals, and has asked for the duo to be sold before his arrival.

Mata, who was bought by United for £37 million, via the Mail, reportedly does not fit into Mourinho’s vision. Indeed, the Spanish playmaker was sold to the Red Devils by Mourinho in January 2014.

The No.8 has performed well this season, creating more chances (36) than any teammate in the league.

Furthermore, Mata has contributed four goals, whilst playing in each of the club’s 25 league fixtures.

Meanwhile, Fellaini, who joined from Everton back in 2013, could also leave should United elect to sack Van Gaal for Mourinho. The Belgium international has been underwhelming since his arrival, failing to secure a starting spot in the side.

This term, the 6ft 4in midfielder has completed the full 90 minutes in just five of his league appearances.
