Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville admitted that Chelsea centre-back David Luiz has proven him wrong with his recent performances this season.
Sky pundit Neville was scathing in his criticism of Luiz during the Brazilian’s initial spell at Stamford Bridge, but has been impressed with his displays since Chelsea boss Antonio Conte switched to a three-man defence.
Neville told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage: “I think the [Chelsea] system suits him. I’ve talked about him being cuddled by his goalkeeper, by Azpilicueta and by Cahill. But also his decision-making has been far better in terms of not being as rash.
“He’s got a fantastic pass and is dominant in the air. I thought he was outstanding away at Man City, clearing his lines at the near post when crosses were coming into the box. Chelsea’s record with him in the team is absolutely fantastic.
“I didn’t see him as a fit at all with Conte. However, he’s been outstanding. I have to say he looks more mature, he’s not getting distracted by the sideshow stuff on the pitch like he did before. He looks to me to have a really good focus. He’s a key figure in that spine for Chelsea.”
Luiz has been hugely impressive this season – he’s averaged seven defensive actions-per-game in the Premier League with an average pass accuracy of 84% – as the 29-year-old has thrived upon being deployed in the heart of Conte’s three-man defence.
Chelsea have been excellent following Conte’s aforementioned tactical alteration, as demonstrated by the fact they’re six points clear at the top of the Premier League having won their last 11 games in a row.
The Blues host Bournemouth on Boxing Day, and will be seeking to provide another indication of their title credentials.
