Neville Makes Major Claim On Liverpool Player After His Heroics Off The Bench

Former Manchester United defender and pundit, Gary Neville has claimed that Darwin Nunez’s brace against Newcastle United could possibly give the striker a boost in his Liverpool career.

Nunez struggled in his first season at Anfield after arriving from Benfica last summer. And he has started the Reds’ opening three Premier League games of the new season on the bench.

The 24-year-old was introduced from his bench role in the 77th minute of Sunday’s game at St. James’ Park. And needed just four minutes to tie the scoreline for Jurgen Klopp’s team. Before netting the game-winning goal in stoppage time to complete a stunning Liverpool comeback.

Nunez will now be hoping that this may be the performance that earns him a run of starts in the side. He looks to replace players like Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota.

What Did Gary Neville Say About Darwin Nunez’s Performance?

As reported by Liverpool Echo, Neville believes he may well be on the verge of doing exactly that after his statement display.

“They were brilliant finishes. If ever a player needed it, it was him,” said the former Manchester United right-back of this cameo display.

“He can be a little bit scruffy, snatch at shots in and around the box and just doesn’t look like he composes himself.

“We always say about strikers in the box, the ones that are ice-cold. To be able to look like the game is really slow even though it is really fast. He doesn’t have that.

“He has that frantic element to him, that you almost feel his mind is really quick. And that is not a good thing for a striker.

“But, today, he composed himself. He had one chance before the two goals that was symptomatic of how he has been at Liverpool.

“But when he got that chance eventually, and the second one, that’s what you have to do to be a top striker.”
