New Zealand blast past Ireland

New Zealand secured a 46-14 victory over Ireland to set up a World Cup semi-final clash with England on Saturday. The All Blacks, who haven’t lost a World Cup game since going down to hosts France in the quarter-finals of the 2007 edition, were ruthless against Ireland at Tokyo Stadium, Chofu. Aaron Smith crossed twice with Beauden Barrett, Codie Taylor, Matt Todd, George Bridge and Jordie Barrett all registering, while Richie Mo’unga added four conversions. Ireland were on the verge of being nilled but a late Robbie Henshaw score and a penalty try saw them put 14 on the board. The loss brought about a disappointing end to Rory Best’s playing career, while head coach Joe Schmidt is also leaving his post. New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen was full of praise for the duo after seeing his side safely through to the last four. Hansen said: “Just before I talk about what we do, I want to acknowledge Rory Best and Joe Schmidt. They’ve been instrumental in making Ireland the number one ranked team in the world. Big congratulations to them on their career. Well done to them, they’ve done great things for Irish rugby.”
