Sunderland‘s 3-0 victory over Everton on Wednesday night confirmed their survival in the Premier League, whilst relegating Norwich City and rivals Newcastle United.
Sunderland went into the game knowing that all they needed was a win, regardless of the result Norwich pulled off against Watford at Carrow Road.
The Canaries beat Watford 4-2, but that result was irrelevant as Sunderland triumphed 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Patrick van Aanholt opened the scoring with a free-kick, before Lamine Kone scored twice from close range. When Allardyce took over on October 9th, Sunderland were second bottom in the table, having failed to win any of their opening eight games in the Premier League.
He’s masterminded eight victories in the top flight since he took over, as well as eight draws, that’s seen them reach safety. It also means that he’s maintained his record of never being relegated from the Premier League.
Sunderland have put together a run that’s seen them lose just one of their last 10 games in the league, whilst the teams around them have faltered.
Despite hiring former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez, Newcastle have been unable to beat the drop for the second time in seven seasons.
Meanwhile Norwich are the only side in the bottom four not to make a change to their manager, so the task for Alex Neil will be to bring them straight back up again.
