Nigeria 4 – 1 Tunisia: Super Eagles  Superior To Carthage Eagles In AFCON Head-To-Head

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Carthage Eagles of Tunisiain the Round of 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The heavyweight clash between the two former AFCON champions will take place at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua on Sunday, January 23 2022.

Ahead of the match, Completesports.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI reveals how both teams have fared against each other in their previous AFCON matches.

TUNISIA 0 – 2 NIGERIA (1978 AFCON, 3rd-Place Match/ Nigeria awarded the game)

The first time Nigeria and Tunisia met at the Africa Cup of Nations was in the third-place match of the 1978 edition in Ghana.

Mohamed Ali Akid put the Tunisians 1-0 ahead before Baba Otu Mohamed equalized for Nigeria in the 42nd minute.

Following Nigeria’s equalizer, the match was abandoned after Tunisia walked off protesting unfair officiating. Nigeria were awarded a 2–0 win, and Tunisia were banned from the next tournament in 1980.

NIGERIA 4-2 TUNISIA (AFCON 2000, Group Stage)

Both countries did not meet again at the AFCON until the group stage of the 2000 tournament co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana.

The Eagles triumphed 4-2 thanks to Austin Okocha and Victor Ikpeba who both had a brace while Sami Trabelsi and Adel Sellimi scored for Tunisia.

Nwankwo Kanu, who was handed the 1999 Africa Player of the Year award before the game, provided three assists.

TUNISIA 5 – 3 NIGERIA pen. (2004 AFCON, Semi-finals)

Tunisia recorded their first and only AFCON win over the Eagles when they (Tunisia) hosted the competition in 2004.

Played inside the Stade 7 November in Rades, Tunisia won 5-3 on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 1-1.

Austin Okocha opened scoring from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, following a foul on Nwankwo Kanu.

Tunisia got a penalty of their own in the 82nd minute which was converted by Khaled Badra.

And in the shootout Tunisia converted all their five kicks while Osaze Odemwingie missed his kick.

NIGERIA 6 – 5 TUNISIA pen. (2006 AFCON, Q/finals )

The two teams met again in the 2006 tournament hosted by Egypt with the Eagles avenging their defeat in 2004.

Under the current interim coach, Austine Eguavoen, Nigeria won 6-5 on penalties after regulation time was tied at 1-1.

Obinna Nsofor gave Nigeria the lead in the sixth minute but Karim Haggui equalized for Tunisia in the 49th minute.

Vincent Enyeama was the hero for the Eagles after saving four penalties in the game. He stopped a spot kick in the first half to maintain Nigeria’s lead before making three saves in the shootout.

NIGERIA 1 – 0 TUNISIA (2019 AFCON, 3rd-Placed Match)

The last time both teams met at the AFCON was the third-place match at Egypt 2019 with Nigeria emerging 1-0 winners.

Gernot Rohr was in charge as the three-time AFCON winners edged Tunisia 1-0 thanks to Odion Ighalo’s third minute goal.

It was Ighalo’s fifth goal of the tournament which earned him the top scorers award.
