Norwich City face the prospect of losing Max Aarons with Tottenham reportedly on the lookout for a new right-back heading into January. Spurs have a problem on the right-hand side of their defence with Serge Aurier proving inconsistent, while manager Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t appear to fully trust academy graduate Kyle Walker-Peters.
The north Londoner’s sudden need for a new right-back makes the decision to sell England international Kieran Tripper to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window all the more bizarre and Norwich could now pay the price for Tottenham’s hasty decision.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Aarons features high up on their list of candidates with last season’s Champions League runners-up having been impressed with the way he’s taken to life in the Premier League.
The England Under-21 international only broke into the Canaries first-team last term but quickly established himself as Daniel Farke’s first-choice right-back, going on to make 41 appearances in the Championship as Norwich stormed to the title.
His excellent form saw him named the EFL Young Player of the Season, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Crystal Palace amongst the names mentioned in connection with the 19-year-old over the course of the campaign.
Norwich temporarily put an end to the speculation they could lose the London-born teenager by signing him to a new five-year contract in the summer but Tottenham are seemingly ready to test their resolve to keep him.
The right-back’s performances for the England Under-21 side have been particularly impressive and Pochettino is thought to be attracted to Aarons’ athleticism and ability to get forward.
Aarons isn’t the only player under consideration with West Brom’s Nathan Ferguson also believed to be a target for the north London side.
Were Tottenham to come calling then it is thought a bid in excess of £20million will be required just to bring Norwich to the negotiating table mid-way through the season.
With the Canaries battling for their lives in the Premier League, it would appear unlikely they would even consider selling one of their key men in January and Tottenham could be forced to wait until the end of the season if they want Aarons.
