‘Not An Easy Place To Come’: Bayern Survive Late Pressure To Win At Celtic

Bayern Munich scored either side of halftime through Michael Olise and Harry Kane, but had to withstand late pressure from hosts Celtic to win 2-1 in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg on Wednesday.

Olise’s magnificent shot in the 45th minute put the Germans ahead at Celtic Park in Glasgow, and Kane doubled the lead with a 49th-minute volley at the far post.

Celtic, who placed the ball in the net with Nicolas Kuehn, but had the effort declared offside in the very first minute of the game, halved the lead in the 79th minute thanks to Daizen Maeda’s close-range header to inject late excitement into the encounter.

“There were definitely areas in the game in which we could have done better and we’ll need to improve for next week, but overall we scored at the right times,” Kane, the England forward, told ESPN.

“They put us under pressure in the end, and we had to stand firm, which we did. When you win a game like this, you’re always happy since it’s not an easy place to visit.”

The visitors, aiming to reach this year’s final at their own Allianz Arena in Munich, enjoyed nearly 70% possession in the first half but battled against Celtic’s disciplined backline.

Bayern had a chance via Kane, but it took an incredible effort from Olise to break the tie on the stroke of halftime.

The offensive midfielder controlled a deep cross from Dayot Upamecano, cut in and smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

They scored again four minutes later, when Kane was entirely unmarked at the far post and volleyed in a Joshua Kimmich corner.

Kane’s goal made him the first English player to reach 60 goals in UEFA club competitions.
