On this Day: Liverpool endure miserable trip to Wembley

Playing at England’s national stadium can always be a great spectacle but Liverpool produced a dismal showing against Tottenham Hotspur in 2017. There are always certain games that football fans look out for when the Premier League fixture list is revealed and the clash between Spurs and Liverpool at Wembley, which was Tottenham’s temporary home ground at the time, on October 22, 2017, was one of those contests picked out.
Both teams had made a good start to their domestic campaign ahead of the match, with each side losing just one of their opening eight league games, but it was Spurs who struck the first telling blow of the season with a stunning 4-1 victory.
England international Harry Kane opened the scoring in the fourth minute after Croatia international defender Dejan Lovren decided to let the ball go over his head, allowing his opponent to run onto the ball before slotting the ball into the back of the net after a little stumble in the box.
Lovren’s day got worse just eight minutes later when he tried to intercept goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ huge throw, only to miss the ball completely and allow Spurs to charge forward. Kane turned provider this time, playing a lovely ball into the box for Heung-min Son to finish off first time.
The Reds did hit back on the 24th minute when Mohamed Salah ran onto a sensational through ball from Jordan Henderson, with the Egyptian’s effort clipping the inside of the left post and bobbling into the net, leaving the scored at 2-1.
Clearly frustrated with the defensive display, Klopp hauled Lovren off on the 31st minute, forcing Joe Gomez to move alongside Joel Matip at centre-back and James Milner to drop in the right-back position for the remainder of the match.
Spurs restored their two-goal lead in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Dele Alli’s volleyed from the edge of the box bounced into the corner, giving the hosts the perfect boost heading into the interval.
Capping off a wonderful performance, Kane grabbed his second in the 56th minute when tucking home from inside the six-yard box after more questionable defending from the visitors.
Tottenham saw out the victory with ease, their first win over Liverpool for five years. Pochettino’s men would end up finishing the season in third on 77 points, one place ahead of the Reds.
