Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has been named Germany’s player of Euro 2016.
Ozil was one of the German side’s most impressive performers in their run to the semi-finals of the tournament, where they were defeated by hosts and runners-up France.
The German public were evidently impressed with the playmaker’s tournament, with 25.2 per cent of the 25,200 supporters who voted in the poll naming Ozil Germany’s top performer, ahead of Jerome Boateng and Toni Kroos.
German fans have also voted for Ozil as the national team’s player of the year in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015.
During the tournament Ozil provided an assist for Bastian Schweinsteiger in a 2-0 win over Ukraine and scored the opening goal in a 1-1 draw with Italy.
However his tournament included several moments of disappointment; the 27- year-old missed penalties in a 3-0 victory over Slovakia and the shootout triumph against Italy.
Though Ozil enjoyed an impressive tournament for Germany he was not to make Uefa’s team of the tournament, though Kroos, Boateng and Joshua Kimmich ensured a healthy representation from the world champions.
