Cole Palmer has reportedly confessed he doesn’t know much about Gianfranco Zola other than being an icon on Fifa after being compared to the former Chelsea star.
Palmer scored another goal as Chelsea defeated Newcastle United 2-1 on Sunday, continuing his incredible start to the season.
In addition, the 22-year-old made a beautiful pass that led to Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal.
As of the beginning of current season, Palmer has made nine Premier League appearances, tallying seven goals and five assists.
Looking farther back, the England international joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and has made 56 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, amassing 32 goals and 20 assists.
Palmer’s seamless elegance and style have been likened to Chelsea great Zola, who gained devoted followers during his 312-game, seven-year stint at Stamford Bridge from 1996 to 2003.
According to CaughtOffside, following Sunday’s victory, Palmer was understandably questioned about the comparisons. The forward’s unexpected reaction, however, was that he knew almost nothing about Zola outside of the Fifa (now EA Sports FC) video game franchise.
“I know he is an icon on Fifa so he must have been good. To be honest, I didn’t really watch him play,” Palmer admitted, adding: “Everyone says he was a great player, so thank you.”

Palmer was also questioned about his “unstoppable” form right now. But he maintained his modesty despite the generous compliments.
“I wouldn’t go that far. I always try to enjoy my football game by game,” he said (via BBC Sport).
