According to multiple media reports, Paris Saint-Germain are willing to sell Kylian Mbappe this summer rather than risk losing him for free in a year’s time after their star striker told the club he would not renew his contract.
Mbappe’s current deal expires at the end of the 2023/24 season, but he has the option to extend it for another year, with a July 31 deadline to inform PSG of his decision.
Mbappe, on the other hand, has reportedly informed the club through letter that he does not intend to activate the one-year extension or sign a new longer-term contract, leaving the French giants exposed to losing one of the world’s most valuable footballers for nothing this time next year.
According to L’Equipe, the move has enraged PSG. If that extension is not triggered, Mbappe will be free to hold talks and accept a pre-contract deal with a club outside of France beginning in January of next year, and he will be free to depart on a free transfer in the summer of 2024. If PSG decides that selling Mbappe is the best option, Real Madrid are anticipated to lead the fight for his signing once again, as the Spanish giants attempt to fill the vacuum left in attack by the departure of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema to Saudi champions Al Ittihad.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane is said to be Real Madrid’s main target, although the England captain has also been linked with a move to PSG.
Mbappe has been a standout for PSG since signing on a season-long loan from Monaco in 2017. The move was made permanent the following year for €180 million, making the then-19-year-old the most expensive teenager in history.
