Patience the key for Tommy

Tommy Fleetwood feels remaining patient will help break his 2019 duck at this week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player. The Englishman is still to win this year and his chances are running out, with the event in Sun City the penultimate on the European Tour calendar ahead of next week’s DP World Tour Championships. Fleetwood’s quest for a major continued this year, finishing second to Shane Lowry at the Open Championship, but his inability to get over the line has become a frustration, having not been in the winner’s circle since the 2018 Abu Dhabi Championship. At the moment he sits tenth in the standings and his form is good ahead of the Nedbank, finishing tied for fourth in WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational before recording further top-10s at the European Masters and Dunhill Links. The 28-year-old believes a patient approach will help him finally claim silverware and add some gloss to his season. “All you can do is take it one shot at a time but I think if I play to my strengths, if I do those things well, then it should suit me,” he told the European Tour. “If there was a win, then the season would probably look a lot better. But you know, at the end of the day, that’s kind of what you’re looking for and sometimes that’s out of your hands. “I feel at times it probably was in my hands and I didn’t finish it off.”
