Paul Merson compared Douglas Luiz to Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Manchester City’s Rodri in his list of the Premier League’s top five most underappreciated players.
Due to suspension, the in-form midfielder has started all but one league games. Luiz has six goals and three assists in 19 games.

A number of clubs, notably long-term admirers Arsenal, have expressed interest in signing him. Merson, on the other hand, believes he has only recently begun to receive the credit he deserves.
“Because Douglas Luiz is a seasoned campaigner, I’m ranking him fifth,” he wrote in his Sports Keeda blog. “When Arsenal wanted to sign him a year ago, people didn’t think much of him, but now everyone can see what he’s all about because he’s been absolutely ripping it up for Aston Villa this season.”
