posted on Instagram, the former Three Lions midfielder wrote: “Why are we obsessed with energy when we should be obsessed with the brain?” hinting that Mainoo should be in England’s squad ahead of Chelsea’s vice-captain.
Despite England’s passage to the knockout stages with one game remaining, the team has been chastised for its poor performances. Southgate’s team selection has been widely questioned.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Scholes emphasized the difference he believes Mainoo could make if given the opportunity to play in England’s midfield, comparing his skills to Toni Kroos and Rodri.
“If Kobbie Mainoo came in, all of a sudden you have control, you have a player who makes your team play football,” the 18-year-old’s coach explained.
“Sometimes it takes just one player to be able to do that. You think of Toni Kroos with Germany, he just makes them play football. Rodri with Man City and Spain
“I think that one change could make a hell of a difference to this team”. A win for England would see them secure top spot in Group C and clinch a knockout stage tie against a third-ranked team from either Group D, E, or F.
