Payback time for Manchester United as they decide against signing Sergio Ramos

Manchester United are not planning to make a move for Sergio Ramos when he leaves Real Madrid at the end of this month.

Official confirmation of the 35-year-old defender’s departure from the Bernabeu came on Wednesday evening, with the Spain star leaving after winning 22 trophies in 16 years.

United, as well as Manchester City and PSG have been linked with signing the centre-back – who leaves Madrid after making 671 appearances – on a free transfer.

According to Daily Mail, United have decided against a move for Ramos, who gave a tearful goodbye press conference on Thursday.

United’s hierarchy – including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward – remain unhappy with Ramos and his brother Rene’s conduct towards them the last time they were in talks to sign him.

The defender himself admitted back in 2015 that he nearly made the switch to Old Trafford – and was flattered by the interest.

In an interview with COPE, he said: ‘There was an offer from United. I considered changing for a while but Real Madrid was always my priority and there were no economic reasons.

‘Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I did feel disappointed for a while. There were some troubles that came to an end.

‘Flattery from big clubs is always good as this is because you are doing well, but the fans and my club want me.’

United are nevertheless keen to sign a centre-back this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyeing a long-term partner for captain Harry Maguire.

Ramos’ Madrid team-mate Raphael Varane is top of United’s wishlist, but they know that Chelsea and PSG want to sign the France centre back too.

Villarreal’s Pau Torres have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
