Pep Guardiola Admits He’s Powerless To Stop Man City Star He “Loves” From Leaving

Pep Guardiola said Ilkay Gundogan has been instrumental in Manchester City’s recent success, and Arsenal wants a piece of the action now.

With Granit Xhaka slated to leave, Pep Guardiola has previously highlighted why Ilkay Gundogan is the ideal purchase for Arsenal. The Switzerland international has recently been widely linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium, and Mikel Arteta appears to be prepared for it.

According to football.london, Xhaka is in early talks with Bayer Leverkusen about a summer move. A deal that would see the Swiss join the Bundesliga outfit for €15 million (£13 million) is thought to be nearing completion, with a contract until 2027 on the table.

Xhaka has been crucial to Arsenal’s success this season, and Gundogan has apparently been considered as a possible successor. If Pep Guardiola recent admiration for the Germany international is any indication, Arsenal appear to be on the right track.

“Ilkay is such an important player,” said the City boss last month. “Humanity, leading with silence – and yet when he talks everybody listens. He is a football player defined perfectly.

“An attacking midfielder with a sense of goal and assists. He is so intelligent in the moment and always in the right position. He can also play as a holding midfielder.

“In every way, Ilkay is an exceptional player.” Gundo, he is really intelligent. So astute. So aggressive. Under pressure… he handles things with ease. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever worked with in my career. The whole shebang. He’s the best. The best.”

Arsenal may be eager to sign Gundogan, but they will face stiff competition for his services. Barcelona, according to the Mirror, are also keen to capture the German’s services – and City aren’t exactly ready to let the midfielder leave.
