Liverpool is the clear favorite to win the Premier League, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola following his team’s goalless draw at home against title rivals Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp’s team leads the table by two points from the Gunners, with City in third place, three points from the top, after Liverpool overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Brighton earlier in the day.
Although Guardiola’s three-time reigning champions have a history of outlasting opponents in the race for the championship, the Catalan acknowledged they had no control over this year’s contest.
In response to the question of whether Liverpool were “clear favourites” to win the league, Guardiola stated, “Always the first is favourite.”
“Arsenal is the second favorite, and we are third. It’s not under our control. All we can think about is Wednesday’s home match against Aston Villa. We were always the favorites when we were winning the league. We held it in our hands. It’s not now. It’s easy.
Guardiola’s team failed to score at home for the first time in 58 games across all competitions, despite both teams giving it their all in an encounter that will not be remembered for long.
In April of last year, as reported by The Herald, Arsenal suffered a 4-1 loss at the Etihad during a run that turned out to be crucial as City overcame Mikel Arteta’s team to win the triple crown.
This felt like a more significant victory for the Gunners as Arsenal’s eight-game losing streak at the Etihad ended without a repeat.
Arsenal manager Arteta stated, “I think the context and the way we arrived here 11 months ago was different, but the difficulty remains the same.”
