Perez ‘proud’ to race in Mexico

Racing Point driver Sergio Perez says it is always a “proud” moment to compete in his home Mexican Grand Prix. This weekend’s GP at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will be the fifth time the race has been held since it returned to the F1 circuit in 2015. Home favourite Perez has competed in all five editions, with his best performance coming when he finished seventh in 2017. The 29-year-old admits he always feels a sense of pride when he takes to the track in Mexico City. “The race in Mexico is a hugely important weekend for me,” he said. “It’s my home race and I always feel very proud to see Formula 1 back in Mexico. “Everybody tells me how much they love the race – my colleagues, the media and the fans. “It’s our chance to show everybody the Mexican way of life and how much we love sports.” Perez’s Racing Point team currently sit seventh in Constructors’ Championship standings, with the Mexican among the points in four of his last five races. Team principal Otmar Szafnauer says that will be the aim once again this weekend. “We expect to be competitive and to be fighting for points on Sunday,” Szafnauer confirmed. “The car has evolved significantly over the last couple of months and Mexico City is another chance to demonstrate the progress we have made recently.”
