Phil Foden Talks On Criticism Of England Boss Gareth Southgate Regarding Euro 2024 Performance

Phil Foden said he ‘feels sorry’ for England manager Gareth Southgate and tried to deflect attention from him by saying the player was to blame for the Three Lions’ dismal results at Euro 2024.

All four of England’s games in Germany have been lackluster and they were lucky to survive a difficult last-16 match against Slovakia last weekend.

Jude Bellingham’s late goal saved the match from an ignominious early exit and Harry Kane’s late goal sealed the victory in extra time.

That was England’s third straight game at Euro 2024 that ended in a loss in the allotted 90 minutes.

The squad frequently lacked forward rhythm or momentum, Southgate’s tactics, player choices and substitutions have drawn criticism.

However, Foden feels that the players have to take ownership of their lackluster performances this summer, reports Manchester World

At England’s Blankenhain training facility, the Manchester City player told reporters, “The players have got to take some of the blame.”

“There has to be some leaders to get together and find out a solution to why it is not working. There is only so much the manager can do. He sets you up in a system and tells you how to press. If it is not going like that, you have to work it out.

“I feel sorry for Gareth,” he added. “In training, he has been telling us to press and be high up on the pitch and I feel like sometimes, it has to come from the players.
