Matchday four of the Champions League gets underway on Tuesday night and there are some crunch battles in store as the race for the last 16 hots up. Some top clubs, including the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have one foot in the next round of Europe’s elite competition but some still have work to do over the remaining three games.
Here are the pick of the games over the next two nights.
Chelsea v Ajax. Frank Lampard’s men have recovered well from a disappointing defeat at home to Valencia on Matchday one, with back-to-back away victories at Lille and Ajax.
Another win over the Dutch side will put them within touching distance of the last 16, with games against Valencia and Lille to come. The same of course applies to Ajax as both sides sit on six points.
With Valencia just two points behind, the group is still very open and Tuesday night’s clash at Stamford Bridge is huge for both sides.
Borussia Dortmund v Inter Milan. Barcelona have Group F pretty much wrapped up as they sit top of the pile on seven points. But the race is on to see who will join them, and it will be one of these two, making Tuesday night’s clash huge.
Inter gave themselves a chance after beating Dortmund at the San Siro on Matchday three, to leave both sides on four points. A win for either will put them in the box seat to join Barca in the last 16.
Dinamo Zagreb v Shakhtar Donetsk. There is also a battle for second place in Group C, with these two sides battling it out for the right to join Manchester City in the latter stages.
They battled out a 2-2 draw a fortnight ago to leave them both on four points and Wednesday night’s clash does not get any bigger.
Shakhtar still have to travel to Manchester City, while Dinamo will entertain Pep Guardiola’s men in the final game of the group, which makes tomorrow night’s clash even more important.
Elsewhere, Red Star Belgrade and Tottenham face off in a big game on Wednesday night as the race for second place in Group B hots up.
Spurs crushed Red Star in north London two weeks ago, but all is not lost for the Serbians, who will have revenge on their minds and a win would put them in the box seat for second place behind Bayern Munich.
Group G also deserves a mention with just three points separating RB Leipzig, who sit top of the group and Benfica at the bottom.
Tuesday night will provide the latest twist to the tale with second-placed Zenit entertaining Leipzig, with Benfica travelling to Lyon.
