Barcelona‘s Gerard Pique defended Marc-Andre ter Stegen after the goalkeeper conceded four goals against Celta Vigo on Sunday night.
The defender suggested that while Ter Stegen could be more cautious in the future, he should still be considered Luis Enrique’s number one between the sticks.
When asked if Ter Stegen should’ve taken fewer risks in the match, the 29- year-old Spanish international replied: “Yes. But the way he plays gives us so much and often [those risks] are good for us. He should continue.”
In another post-match interview, the German keeper seemed to place the blame of the defeat on himself.
Ter Stegen: "it's my fault. Although this happened, I won't entirely change my okay".
Strikes me as the right response, in both senses.— Sid Lowe (@sidlowe) October 2, 2016
Two goals from Pique and one from Neymar wasn’t enough to overcome a 3-0 half-time deficit at Celta Vigo, who capitalised on some poor defending from Barca.
Jeremy Mathieu scored an own-goal after Pione Sisto and Iago Aspas had opened the scoring to give a comfortable look to the scoreline. Pedro Hernandez sealed the points for the home side, jumping up to 10th in La Liga as a result.
Meanwhile Barcelona sit fourth behind rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, as well as Sevilla. The Catalan giants have won just four of their opening seven La Liga games this term, but they’re only two points off top spot.
